Bleaching
Two men with a roll of blankets hanging in the doorway of a
wooden bleaching shed, Witney 1898.
The next step was to bleach the blankets in long wooden, air
tight buildings by burning sulphur underneath the blanket
lengths hung from rails in the roof. The blankets had a strong
smell afterwards which was difficult to get out completely and
as some customers objected to this, unbleached blankets were
made as well. These unbleached goods were cleaned with fuller's
earth instead of soap and the only bleaching they had was to be
hung out in sunlight.
